They cite his father, Captain Thomas Elms Matthew, as settling in Brougham. I'm assuming, Peter, being the first of 9 children, was born in Brougham.

He thinks she may have been a reservation Indian or Metis taken from the reserve and at the age of 2 or 3 and adopted by the Riddells.
